Thyroid ultrasound is the first-line exam to study this gland located in the neck, responsible for producing hormones that are essential for metabolism. It is a simple, quick and non-invasive exam that allows structural changes of the thyroid to be identified and supports the early diagnosis of thyroid diseases. Because it does not use radiation, it can be performed at any age, including in pregnant women and children.
What is a Thyroid Ultrasound and what is it for?
Thyroid ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves emitted by a probe, which pass through the tissues and are reflected, generating real-time images of the gland.
At X-Clinic, ultrasounds are performed with the latest technology, using high-end High-Resolution Digital Ultrasound equipment, including three-dimensional technology and real-time 3D visualization – 4D, Color Doppler, and panoramic imaging.
It is a safe, painless and harmless technique, used to:
- Assess the size, volume and shape of the thyroid;
- Study the texture and echogenicity of the gland;
- Identify nodules or other lesions;
- Differentiate between solid and cystic lesions;
- Support the monitoring of already diagnosed thyroid diseases.
How much does a Thyroid Ultrasound cost?
The price of a thyroid ultrasound is €60 on a private basis. However, X-Clinic has the following agreements:
- ADSE (the patient only pays the co-payment of €8), ADM GNR, SAD PSP;
- Insurance companies: Médis, Multicare, Advance Care, Allianz, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, SS CGD, SAMS Quadros, SAMS, Montepio, RNA, Generali, Mudum, MGEN, Aegon, Vitória, Una Seguros, other insurers;
- Health Plans: Medicare, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, Continente Wells, ACP, other health plans.
The final price varies depending on the healthcare system or insurance you wish to use.
How is it performed?
During the ultrasound, the patient lies on an examination table with the neck slightly extended to make it easier to visualize the gland. The doctor applies a transparent gel to the skin of the neck, which improves the transmission of the sound waves and allows the probe to glide properly.
The moving images are observed in real time on a screen and interpreted by the specialist doctor. The exam usually lasts between 10 and 20 minutes.

What does it detect?
Thyroid ultrasound allows the gland to be examined in detail and different changes to be identified. It is possible to detect nodules, assess their characteristics and distinguish whether they appear benign or suspicious. It also allows visualization of simple or complex cysts, as well as diffuse thyroid changes, which are common in inflammatory conditions such as thyroiditis or goiter. The exam can also assess the gland’s vascularization using Doppler and check for suspicious cervical lymph nodes, which may be associated with thyroid disease. In addition to diagnosis, ultrasound is very useful to guide procedures such as fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of nodules that require further evaluation.
In which cases is it indicated?
Thyroid ultrasound may be requested in several situations, namely:
- Palpation of nodules in the neck;
- Diffuse enlargement of the gland (goiter);
- Suspected or follow-up of inflammatory thyroid disease (e.g. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis);
- Monitoring of previously identified nodules;
- Investigation of abnormal thyroid function blood tests;
- Follow-up after thyroid surgery or treatment;
- Assessment of suspicious cervical lymph nodes;
- Among others.
Preparing for a Thyroid Ultrasound
This exam does not require any prior preparation. You will only be asked to remove any accessories (e.g. scarf, jewellery, etc.) or clothing (e.g. turtleneck jumper) that may interfere with the exam.
You should bring previous exams (ultrasounds, laboratory tests, medical reports) and the exam prescription.
Where to have it done?
Thyroid ultrasound can be performed at X-Clinic (Av. Eng. Duarte Pacheco, nº26 – mezzanine floor, 1070-110 Lisbon) or at NRD (Avenida Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, nº 11-B, ground floor, 1070 – 060 Lisbon – next to Praça de Espanha)
