Bladder ultrasound via suprapubic

Suprapubic bladder ultrasound is a simple, quick, and non-invasive imaging exam that allows a detailed assessment of the bladder. It is frequently used to investigate urinary changes, difficulty urinating, or suspected infections, helping with the early diagnosis of various conditions. Because it does not use ionizing radiation, it is considered safe at all ages, including for children and pregnant women.

What is a Suprapubic Bladder Ultrasound and what is it for?

Bladder ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves emitted by a probe. These waves travel through the tissues and are reflected back, producing real-time images of the bladder.

At X-Clinic, ultrasounds are performed using the latest technology, with high-resolution digital ultrasound equipment, including three-dimensional technology and real-time 3D viewing (4D), color Doppler, and panoramic imaging.

It is a simple, safe, harmless, and painless technique, indicated to:

  • Assess the shape, volume, and walls of the bladder;
  • Identify thickening or lesions in the bladder wall;
  • Evaluate the presence of stones, masses, or diverticula;
  • Measure residual urine volume after urination;
  • Support the diagnosis of urinary infections or inflammation;
  • Among other medical indications.

What is the price of a Suprapubic Bladder Ultrasound?

The price of a suprapubic bladder ultrasound is €50 for private patients. However, X-Clinic has the following agreements:

  • ADSE (the patient only pays a co-payment of €6), ADM GNR, SAD PSP;
  • Insurance companies: Médis, Multicare, Advance Care, Allianz, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, SS CGD, SAMS Quadros, SAMS, Montepio, RNA, Generali, Mudum, MGEN, Aegon, Vitória, Una Seguros, other insurers;
  • Health Plans: Medicare, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, Continente Wells, ACP, other health plans.

The final price may vary depending on the health system or insurance you wish to use.

How is it performed?

Bladder ultrasound is always performed via the suprapubic approach. The patient lies on an examination table in a dimly lit room to facilitate image interpretation.

The doctor applies a transparent gel to the lower abdominal skin, allowing proper transmission of the ultrasound waves and easier probe movement. The moving images are viewed in real time on a screen and interpreted by the specialist.

The exam lasts approximately 10 to 20 minutes.

Suprapubic Bladder Ultrasound

What does it detect?

Suprapubic bladder ultrasound allows a detailed evaluation of the bladder and the identification of several changes. It can show whether there is thickening or irregularities of the bladder wall, detect stones (lithiasis) inside the bladder, and identify the presence of masses such as tumors or polyps. The exam also highlights bladder diverticula, signs of inflammation or infection, and measures how much urine remains after urination (post-void residual). In addition to the initial diagnosis, this method is very useful for follow-up in patients with known urological conditions and for surveillance after surgery.

When is it recommended?

Suprapubic bladder ultrasound may be recommended in situations such as:

  • Difficulty urinating or fully emptying the bladder;
  • Suspected recurrent urinary tract infection;
  • Blood in the urine (hematuria);
  • Pelvic pain or discomfort;
  • Follow-up of urological diseases (e.g., neurogenic bladder);
  • Assessment of bladder stones or suspicious masses;
  • Monitoring after urological surgery;
  • Among other situations.

Preparation for Suprapubic Bladder Ultrasound

To perform the exam, you need to drink 1 liter of water one hour beforehand, without urinating, to ensure the bladder is full. This allows a better visualization of its structure.

You should also bring any previous exams, if available, as well as the exam prescription.

Where to do it?

Bladder ultrasound can be performed at X-Clinic (Av. Eng. Duarte Pacheco, nº26 – Intermediate floor, 1070-110 Lisbon) or at NRD (Avenida Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, nº 11-B, ground floor, 1070 – 060 Lisbon – Next to Praça de Espanha)

Typology of exams

Does suprapubic bladder ultrasound hurt?

No. It is a painless exam, although a full bladder may cause some discomfort.

Why do I need a full bladder?

A full bladder improves ultrasound transmission and allows a better assessment of its shape, walls, and contents.

What is a post‑void (post‑micturition) bladder ultrasound?

It measures how much urine remains in the bladder after you urinate (residual volume). It is performed exactly like a suprapubic bladder ultrasound, but right after voiding. It is particularly useful in cases of incomplete emptying, neurogenic bladder, enlarged prostate, and other urologic conditions.

How long does the exam take?

Usually 10 to 20 minutes.

When will I receive the results?

A preliminary comment may be given right after the exam, but the final written report will be available within a maximum of 7 days.

Is bladder ultrasound safe during pregnancy?

Yes. It uses no radiation and is considered safe during pregnancy.

Can this exam be done in children?

Yes. It is safe and used at all ages, including children.

Do I need to fast?

No. You only need to drink water before the exam.

Does bladder ultrasound replace other exams?

Not always. Depending on the clinical case, it may be complemented by other diagnostic methods.
